Yeah plants are cool, especially during the pandemic where we face existential threats of climate change and overconsumption. A lot of fashion these days stem from the consciousness in what we consume.
The surge of vintage dealers stems from valuing storied garments as well as earth tones popularity can also may come from this re-connection with the natural world.
And with that said, what is the reason why these shirts need to be made? The Cultivate & Growth collection actually comes from a place of vulnerability in my own journey, besides the ecological factors of the beauty of the natural world.
The literal definition of the name is plants naturally growing and as people we cultivate them to ensure that plants are able to become the best they can be. As we go through life, we grow. Of course, we’ve heard that a million times. And when we cultivate, we care for ourselves in ways that not we’ve thought of but from the necessity of need.
It’s been a super hard year for me personally but it was kind of healing to think of why these shirts needed to exist. In a sense it was an outward flowing of things that can be and are, learning to take care of the relationships I have with people and myself a little bit better.
So with these shirts coming from no matter what place you’re in right now, it’s all part of this unseen process we can’t see. These graphics are somewhat an inflection point of Filipino Diasporic experience into something greater in the human narrative. Whether you physically cultivate plants or flowers and build a nipa hut, the hope is that you also cultivate yourself, your loved ones, and the community around you as well.
